The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about lost property. He said, "Announce it for a year. If its owner comes seeking it, hand it over to him. Otherwise, take note of its container and its tie, then use it. If its owner comes seeking it afterward, hand it over to him."
حدثنا محمد بن إسماعيل بن أبي فديك حدثني الضحاك بن عثمان عن أبي النضر مولى عمر بن عبيد الله عن بسر بن سعيد
أن رسول الله ﷺ سئل عن اللقطة فقال عرفها سنة فإن جاء باغيها فأدها إليه وإلا فاعرف عفاصها ووكاءها ثم كلها فإن جاء باغيها فأدها إليه
Its isnad is sahih. Abu Nadr, the freed slave of Umar bin Ubaydullah, is Salim bin Abu Umaya, who is often mentioned. He is trustworthy, and the hadith was previously mentioned at 21067.
