Zayd bin Thabit said, "May Allah forgive Rafi bin Khadij. By Allah, I know the hadith better than he does. Two men came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who had been fighting one another, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'If this is how you behave, then do not lease farmland.' Rafi only heard his words, 'Do not lease farmland.'"
Its chain is hasan, because of Walid bin Abu Walid Madani, freed slave of Uthman, and because of Abdul-Rahman bin Ishaq bin Abdullah Qurashi, and because of Abu Ubayda bin Muhammad bin Ammar bin Yasir. These narrators have been criticized regarding their memory, and Abdul-Rahman has also been criticized concerning the matter of predestination, except that Muslim narrated for him. The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud, 3/257, number 3390, in the chapter on sharecropping, and similarly by Nasai, 7/50, number 3937, and Ibn Majah, in the chapter on pledges, 2/822, number 2461.This hadith is what led later jurists of the schools of law to permit leasing farmland for money or for a share of the produce, whether a quarter share or otherwise.
