I was with Abu Dharr when his stipend was paid out, and a slave girl of his was with him. She began to take care of his needs, and once he said, "We will settle them." A surplus remained with him. The narrator said, I think he said it was seven dirhams. He instructed her to buy small copper coins with it.I said, "Abu Dharr, why not save it for a need that may befall you, or for a guest who may come to you?"He replied, "My dear friend ﷺ entrusted me that any gold or silver hoarded away will be burning coals against its owner on the Day of Resurrection until he spends it freely in the path of Allah."

كنت مع أبي ذر وقد خرج عطاؤه ومعه جارية له فجعلت تقضي حوائجه وقال مرة نقضي قال ففضل معه فضل قال أحسبه قال سبع قال فأمرها أن تشتري بها فلوسا قلت يا أبا ذر لو ادخرته للحاجة تنوبك وللضيف يأتيك فقال إن خليلي عهد إلي أن أيما ذهب أو فضة أوكي عليه فهو جمر على صاحبه يوم القيامة حتى يفرغه إفراغا في سبيل الله
