The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode a donkey and seated me behind him. He said, "Abu Dharr, what would you do if a severe famine struck the people, so severe that you could not even rise from your bed to reach your mosque?"I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He said, "Remain chaste and restrained."Then he said, "Abu Dharr, what would you do if a devastating plague struck the people, so that a house would be sold for the price of a single slave," meaning the grave, "what would you do?"I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He said, "Be patient."Then he said, "Abu Dharr, what would you do if people killed one another," meaning until the stones of Zayt were submerged in blood, "what would you do?"I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He said, "Stay in your house and lock your door behind you."I asked, "What if I am not left alone?"He said, "Then go to those you belong to and stay with them."I asked, "Should I take up my weapon?"He said, "Then you would share in what they are doing. But if you fear the gleam of the sword might frighten you, throw the edge of your garment over your face so that the attacker carries his sin and yours."
حدثنا مرحوم حدثنا أبو عمران الجوني عن عبد الله بن الصامت
ركب رسول الله ﷺ حمارا وأردفني خلفه وقال يا أبا ذر أرأيت إن أصاب الناس جوع شديد لا تستطيع أن تقوم من فراشك إلى مسجدك كيف تصنع قال الله ورسوله أعلم قال تعفف قال يا أبا ذر أرأيت إن أصاب الناس موت شديد يكون البيت فيه بالعبد يعني القبر كيف تصنع قلت الله ورسوله أعلم قال اصبر قال يا أبا ذر أرأيت إن قتل الناس بعضهم بعضا يعني حتى تغرق حجارة الزيت من الدماء كيف تصنع قال الله ورسوله أعلم قال اقعد في بيتك وأغلق عليك بابك قال فإن لم أترك قال فأت من أنت منهم فكن فيهم قال فآخذ سلاحي قال إذن تشاركهم فيما هم فيه ولكن إن خشيت أن يروعك شعاع السيف فألق طرف ردائك على وجهك حتى يبوء بإثمه وإثمك
