Ubayy bin Kaab reported,

Jibreel came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was at the springs of Banu Ghifar and said, "Allah commands you to have your community recite the Quran in one mode."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "I ask Allah for His pardon and forgiveness."The narrator went on to mention the rest of the hadith until he said that Jibreel told him, "Allah commands you to have your community recite the Quran in seven modes, and whoever recites in any one of them has recited as it was revealed."

أن جبريل عليه السلام أتى النبي ﷺ وهو بأضاءة بني غفار فقال إن الله تبارك وتعالى يأمرك أن تقرئ أمتك القرآن على حرف واحد فقال أسأل الله معافاته ومغفرته فذكر الحديث إلى أن قال إن الله يأمرك أن تقرئ أمتك القرآن على سبعة أحرف فمن قرأ حرفا منها فهو كما قال
