Ubayy bin Kaab reported,

I was in the mosque when a man entered and recited the Quran in a way I found objectionable. Then another man entered and recited it differently from the first. So we all got up and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.I said, "Messenger of Allah, this man recited in a way I found objectionable, then this other man came in and recited differently from his companion."The Prophet ﷺ told them both, "Recite."So they recited, and he said, "You have both done well."When the Prophet ﷺ said this to them, it weighed heavily upon me, more than it ever had even during the days of ignorance. When he saw what had come over me, he struck my chest, and I broke out in a sweat, as though I were looking at Allah in awe.He said, "Ubayy, my Lord sent word to me to recite the Quran in one form, but I asked Him to make it easier for my community. So He sent word to me to recite it in two forms, and again I asked Him to make it easier for my community. Then He sent word to me to recite it in seven forms, and for each request granted I could ask of Him one thing."Ubayy said, "I said, 'O Allah, forgive my community. O Allah, forgive my community,' and I deferred the third request to a day when all creation, even Ibrahim, peace be upon him, will turn to me in need."

حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد عن إسماعيل بن أبي خالد حدثني عبد الله بن عيسى عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي ليلى

عن أبي بن كعب قال

كنت في المسجد فدخل رجل فقرأ قراءة أنكرتها عليه ثم دخل آخر فقرأ قراءة سوى قراءة صاحبه فقمنا جميعا فدخلنا على رسول الله ﷺ فقلت يا رسول الله إن هذا قرأ قراءة أنكرتها عليه ثم دخل هذا فقرأ قراءة غير قراءة صاحبه فقال لهما النبي ﷺ اقرأا فقرأا قال أصبتما فلما قال لهما النبي ﷺ الذي قال كبر علي ولا إذ كنت في الجاهلية فلما رأى الذي غشيني ضرب في صدري ففضت عرقا وكأنما أنظر إلى الله تبارك وتعالى فرقا فقال يا أبي إن ربي تبارك وتعالى أرسل إلي أن اقرأ القرآن على حرف فرددت إليه أن هون على أمتي فأرسل إلي أن اقرأه على حرفين فرددت إليه أن هون على أمتي فأرسل إلي أن اقرأه على سبعة أحرف ولك بكل ردة مسألة تسألنيها قال قلت اللهم اغفر لأمتي اللهم اغفر لأمتي وأخرت الثالثة ليوم يرغب إلي فيه الخلق حتى إبراهيم عليه الصلاة والسلام
