We were on pilgrimage when I found a whip and picked it up. The people said, "Are you taking it? Perhaps it belongs to a Muslim man."I replied, "Should I not take it and benefit from it, rather than letting a wolf devour it?"Then I met Ubayy bin Kaab and mentioned this to him.He said, "You did well." Then he said, "I once found a purse containing a hundred dinars. I came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him about it.He said, 'Announce it for a year.'So I announced it for a year, then came back to him and said, 'I have announced it for a year.'He said, 'Announce it for another year.' Then he said, 'Make use of it, but preserve its string and its wrapping, and count its contents. If its owner comes...'"Jareer said, "I do not remember what came after this," meaning the rest of the hadith.
حدثنا أبو خيثمة حدثنا جرير عن الأعمش عن سلمة بن كهيل
كنا حجاجا فوجدت سوطا فأخذته فقال القوم تأخذه فلعله لرجل مسلم قال فقلت أوليس لي أخذه فأنتفع به خير من أن يأكله الذئب فلقيت أبي بن كعب فذكرت ذلك له فقال أحسنت ثم قال التقطت صرة فيها مائة دينار فأتيت النبي ﷺ فذكرت ذلك له فقال عرفها حولا فعرفتها حولا ثم أتيته فقلت قد عرفتها حولا فقال عرفها سنة أخرى ثم قال انتفع بها واحفظ وكاءها وخرقتها وأحص عددها فإن جاء صاحبها قال جرير فلم أحفظ ما بعد هذا يعني تمام الحديث
