I went out with Zayd bin Sawhan and Salman bin Rabia, and when we reached al-Udhayb I picked up a whip. They both said to me, "Throw it down," but I refused. When I arrived in Medina, I met Ubayy bin Kaab and mentioned this to him. He said, "I once picked up a hundred dinars during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I asked him about it. He said, 'Announce it for a year.' I announced it for a year but found no one who recognized it. Then he said, 'Note its number, its container, and its tie, then announce it for a year. If its owner comes, give it to him, otherwise it is like any other property of yours.'"This is the wording of Waki. Ibn Numayr said in his version that he said, "Announce it." So I announced it for a year, then came to him. He said, "Announce it." So I announced it for a year, then came to him. He said, "Announce it." So I announced it for a year, then came to him. He said, "Note its number, its container, and its tie. If anyone comes who can tell you its number, its container, and its tie, give it to him. Otherwise make use of it."
