The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to them while they were sitting and said, "Shall I tell you who has the best rank among people?"They replied, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."He said, "A man holding the reins of his horse in the path of Allah until he dies or is killed. Shall I tell you who comes next?"They said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."He said, "A man secluded in a mountain pass, establishing the prayer, paying the zakat, and keeping away from the evils of people. Shall I tell you who has the worst rank among people?"They said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."He said, "The one who is asked in the name of Allah but does not give."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Saeed bin Khalid bin Abdullah bin Qariz Kinani Madani is trustworthy. Nasai deemed him trustworthy, and Ibn Hibban listed him among the trustworthy narrators. Some have reported from Nasai that he weakened him, but Hafiz found this claim objectionable in Tahzib, and neither he nor Bukhari mentioned him among the daif narrators. In fact, Bukhari gave him a biographical entry in Kabir 2/1/429 without mentioning any criticism of him.Ismail bin Abdul-Rahman bin Zuwayb Asadi is trustworthy. Abu Zura, Ibn Saad, and Daraqutni deemed him trustworthy, and Bukhari gave him a biographical entry in Kabir 1/1/362-363.As for the hadith, Tirmidhi related its meaning in abridged form, 3:14, through the route of Ibn Lahia, from Bukayr bin Ashaj, from Ata bin Yasar, from Ibn Abbas, and said, "A hasan gharib hadith from this route, and this hadith is related through other routes as well, from Ibn Abbas, from the Prophet ﷺ." Bukhari related part of it in Kabir, in the biographical entry of Ismail bin Abdul-Rahman, through the route of Ibn Abu Dhib that appears here. Munziri mentioned it in Targhib wa Tarhib 2:173 as it appears here, and said, "Tirmidhi related it and said, 'A hasan gharib hadith,' as did Nasai and Ibn Hibban in his Sahih, and the wording is theirs, and it is more complete. Malik related it from Ata bin Yasar as a mursal narration." See also 1987."He asks by Allah" may be read as an active construction, meaning he asks someone else by the right of Allah, but then when he himself is asked by it, he does not give, but rather recoils and withholds. It may also be read as a passive construction, meaning someone else asks him by Allah, but he does not respond. Either way, such a person is the worst of people. We ask Allah for protection. This will come again at 2929, 2930, 2961. See also 2838.
