Ubayy bin Kaab reported,

He traced it back to the Prophet ﷺ, who said, "Two angels came to me. One of them said to the other, 'Have him recite.'The other asked, 'On how many?'He said, 'One letter.'He said, 'Increase him,'" until it reached seven letters.
