I recited a verse, and Ibn Masud recited it differently, so I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Did you not teach me such-and-such verse this way?"He replied, "Yes."Then Ibn Masud said, "Did you not teach it to me this way?"He replied, "Yes. Both of you have recited it correctly and well."Ubayy said, He then struck my chest and said, "Ubayy bin Kaab, I was taught the Quran, and I was asked, 'In one letter or in two?' The angel who was with me said, 'In two.' So I said, 'In two.' Then he asked, 'In two or three?' The angel who was with me said, 'In three.' So I said, 'In three.' And so it went until it reached seven letters, every one of them sufficient and complete. Whether you say 'Forgiving, Merciful,' or 'Hearing, Knowing,' or 'Knowing, Hearing,' Allah is indeed all of these, so long as you do not end a verse of punishment with mercy, or a verse of mercy with punishment."
عبد الرحمن بن مهدي حدثنا همام عن قتادة عن يحيى بن يعمر عن سليمان بن صرد
قرأت آية وقرأ ابن مسعود خلافها فأتيت النبي ﷺ فقلت ألم تقرئني آية كذا وكذا قال بلى فقال ابن مسعود ألم تقرئنيها كذا وكذا فقال بلى كلاكما محسن مجمل قال فقلت له فضرب صدري فقال يا أبي بن كعب إني أقرئت القرآن فقيل لي على حرف أو على حرفين قال فقال الملك الذي معي على حرفين فقلت على حرفين فقال على حرفين أو ثلاثة فقال الملك الذي معي على ثلاثة فقلت على ثلاثة حتى بلغ سبعة أحرف ليس منها إلا شاف كاف إن قلت غفورا رحيما أو قلت سميعا عليما أو عليما سميعا فالله كذلك ما لم تختم آية عذاب برحمة أو آية رحمة بعذاب
