Saeed bin Jubayr reported,

We were with Abdullah bin Abbas in his house when he said, "Ask me."I said, "Abu Abbas, may Allah make me your ransom, in Kufa there is a storyteller called Nawf who claims that he is not the Musa of the Children of Israil."Amr bin Dinar said, "The enemy of Allah has lied."Yala bin Muslim said, Ibn Abbas said, Ubayy bin Kaab told me, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Musa, the Messenger of Allah عليه السلام, was admonishing the people one day until eyes overflowed with tears and hearts were softened. Then he turned away, and a man caught up with him and said, 'Messenger of Allah, is there anyone on earth more knowledgeable than you?' He answered, 'No.' So Allah reproached him for not referring knowledge back to Allah تبارك وتعالى, and Allah revealed to him, 'I have a servant more knowledgeable than you.' He said, 'My Lord, where?' Allah said, 'At the junction of the two seas.' He said, 'My Lord, give me a sign by which I will recognize that.'"Amr told me he said, "Where the fish parts from you."Yala said, "Take a dead fish, at the place where life is breathed back into it." So he took a fish and put it in a basket and said to his servant, "I do not ask of you anything except that you tell me where the fish parts from you."The servant said, "You have not asked much of me."That is the meaning of His statement تبارك وتعالى, "When Musa said to his servant" — Yusha bin Nun. This part is not from Saeed bin Jubayr. While he was in the shade of a rock in a moist spot, the fish began to stir while Musa was asleep. His servant said, "I will not wake him." When Musa awoke, the servant forgot to tell him, and the fish stirred until it entered the sea, and Allah تبارك وتعالى held back the flow of the sea over it so that its track was like an impression in stone.Amr said to me, "And its track was like an impression in stone," and he made a circle joining his thumbs and the fingers next to them."We have certainly suffered fatigue from this journey of ours." He said, "Allah تبارك وتعالى has now removed the fatigue from you." This part is not from Saeed bin Jubayr. So he informed him, and they returned and found Khidr عليه السلام.Uthman bin Abu Sulayman told me he was on a green carpet in the middle of the sea.Saeed bin Jubayr said, "He was wrapped in his garment, with one end of it under his feet and the other end under his head." Musa greeted him with the salam, and he uncovered his face and said, "Is there peace in your land? Who are you?"He replied, "I am Musa."He asked, "The Musa of the Children of Israil?"He answered, "Yes."He asked, "What is your business?"He said, "I have come so that you may teach me from what you have been taught of right guidance."He said, "Is it not enough for you that the knowledge of the Torah is in your hands and that revelation comes to you? Musa, I have a knowledge that is not fitting for you to know, and you have a knowledge that is not fitting for me to know."Then a bird came and took something with its beak, and he said, "By Allah, my knowledge and your knowledge compared to Allah's knowledge are only like what this bird has taken from the sea with its beak."When they boarded the ship, they found small ferries that carried people from this shore to that shore. The crew recognized him and said, "The righteous servant of Allah." We said to Saeed, "Khidr?" He said, "Yes." So they did not charge him a fare. Then he made a hole in it and drove a peg into it.Musa said, "Have you made a hole in it to drown its people? You have certainly done a grave thing."Mujahid said, "Something detestable.""He said, 'Did I not tell you that you would never be able to bear with me patiently?'"The first instance was forgetfulness, the second was a condition, and the third was deliberate."He said, 'Do not blame me for what I forgot, and do not burden me in this matter of mine with hardship.'"Then they met a boy and he killed him.Yala bin Muslim said, Saeed bin Jubayr said, "They found boys playing, and he took hold of a disbelieving boy who was clever, laid him down, and slaughtered him with a knife."He said, "Have you killed an innocent soul?" one who has not committed any wrong. So they continued on and found a wall about to collapse, and he set it upright. Saeed said, "With his hand, like this," and he raised his hand, and it became upright.Yala said, "I think Saeed said, 'He wiped it with his hand and it became upright.'""He said, 'If you wished, you could have taken a wage for it.'"Saeed said, "A wage that we could eat."He used to recite it, "And there was behind them", but Ibn Abbas used to recite it as, "And there was before them a king."Some claim, on authority other than Saeed, that he said, "This boy who was killed, they claim his name was Jaysur."He said, "Seizing every ship by force", and he intended that when the boat passed by, he would let it go because of its defect, and once they had passed safely, they would repair it and benefit from it afterward. Some say they plugged it with a glass flask, and others say with tar.His parents were believers and he was a disbeliever. "So we feared that he would burden them with transgression and disbelief" — that his love would compel them to follow him in his religion. "So we wanted their Lord to give them in exchange one better than him in purity and nearer in mercy" — they would be more merciful to them than the first one whom Khidr killed.Someone other than Saeed claimed that they said it was a girl. Dawud bin Abu Asim reported from more than one person that it was a girl. It also reached me from Saeed bin Jubayr that it was a girl. I found in my father's book, from Yahya bin Maeen, from Hisham bin Yusuf, the same.
