We visited Khabab to check on him during his illness, and we found him building a wall of his. He said, "A Muslim is rewarded for everything he spends on, except for what he places into this dirt." He had cauterized his belly seven times, and he said, "Had the Messenger of Allah ﷺ not forbidden us from praying for death, I would have prayed for it."

دخلنا على خباب نعوده وهو يبني حائطا له فقال المسلم يؤجر في كل شيء خلا ما يجعل في هذا التراب وقد اكتوى سبعا في بطنه وقال لولا أن رسول الله ﷺ نهانا أن ندعو بالموت لدعوت به
Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Abu Khalid is Ismail, mentioned previously. Bukhari narrated the hadith in 10/127, no. 5672, in Fath, in the chapter on illness, on a sick person wishing for death, and Muslim in 4/2064, no. 2681, in the chapter on remembrance, with similar wording, and Tirmidhi in 4/651, no. 2483, and he said, hasan sahih, and Ibn Majah in 2/1394, no. 4193, and Humaydi in 1/83, no. 154.
