On the day of the Conquest, people kept passing by us, coming from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I used to recite the Quran while I was just a boy. Then my father came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the news of his people's acceptance of Islam, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let the one who knows the most Quran lead you in prayer."So they looked, and I was the one who knew the most of it among them. They put me forward to lead, but a woman said, "Cover the backside of your reciter!" So they bought a cloak for me.I have never been happier about anything than I was about that.
حدثنا عفان حدثنا شعبة حدثني أيوب قال سمعت
لما كان يوم الفتح جعل الناس يمرون علينا قد جاءوا من عند رسول الله ﷺ فكنت أقرأ وأنا غلام فجاء أبي بإسلام قومه إلى رسول الله ﷺ فقال رسول الله ﷺ يؤمكم أكثركم قرآنا فنظروا فكنت أكثرهم قرآنا قال فقالت امرأة غطوا است قارئكم قال فاشتروا له بردة قال فما فرحت أشد من فرحي بذلك
Its isnad is sahih, its narrators are trustworthy and well known, and the hadith has already appeared at 15845 in abbreviated form, and at 20210 in like form.
