Abdul-Rahman reported,

We came as a delegation to Muawiya to offer him condolences, along with Ziyad, and Abu Bakra was with us. When we arrived, no delegation pleased him as much as ours did.He said, "Abu Bakra, narrate to us something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Abu Bakra replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to be pleased by good dreams and would ask about them. One day he said, 'Which of you has seen a dream?'A man from the people said, 'I saw a balance lowered down from the sky. You and Abu Bakr were weighed in it, and you outweighed Abu Bakr. Then Abu Bakr and Umar were weighed in it, and Abu Bakr outweighed Umar. Then Umar and Uthman were weighed in it, and Umar outweighed Uthman. Then the balance was lifted up.'The Prophet ﷺ was displeased by this, meaning by its interpretation, and said, 'A caliphate of prophethood, then Allah gives kingship to whomever He wills.'"Abu Bakra said, "He then shoved us by the napes of our necks and turned us out. The next day we returned, and he said, 'Abu Bakra, narrate to us something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' So he struck him with the same answer, and he shoved us by the napes of our necks again. On the third day we returned, and he asked him again. He struck him with the same answer."Muawiya then said, "You are saying that we are kings. We have accepted being kings."

وفدنا إلى معاوية نعزيه مع زياد ومعنا أبو بكرة فلما قدمنا لم يعجب بوفد ما أعجب بنا فقال يا أبا بكرة حدثنا بشيء سمعته من رسول الله ﷺ فقال كان رسول الله ﷺ يعجبه الرؤيا الحسنة ويسأل عنها وإنه قال ذات يوم أيكم رأى رؤيا فقال رجل من القوم أنا رأيت ميزانا دلي من السماء فوزنت فيه أنت وأبو بكر فرجحت بأبي بكر ثم وزن فيه أبو بكر وعمر فرجح أبو بكر بعمر ثم وزن فيه عمر وعثمان فرجح عمر بعثمان ثم رفع الميزان فاستاء لها النبي ﷺ أي أولها فقال خلافة نبوة ثم يؤتي الله تبارك وتعالى الملك من يشاء قال فزخ في أقفائنا وأخرجنا فلما كان من الغد عدنا فقال يا أبا بكرة حدثنا بشيء سمعته من رسول الله ﷺ قال فبكعه به فزخ في أقفائنا فلما كان في اليوم الثالث عدنا فسأله أيضا قال فبكعه به فقال معاوية تقول إنا ملوك قد رضينا بالملك
