The Prophet ﷺ was present when people mentioned a certain man, and one of them said, "Messenger of Allah, after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself, no one surpasses this man in such and such a quality."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Woe to you! You have just cut your companion's throat!" repeating this several times.Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If any of you must praise his brother, let him say, 'I reckon so-and-so to be such,' if he truly believes him to be so, 'and I do not declare anyone pure before Allah . His reckoning rests with Allah. I reckon him to be such and such.'"
حدثنا محمد بن جعفر حدثنا شعبة عن خالد الحذاء
عن النبي ﷺ أنهم ذكروا رجلا عنده فقال رجل يا رسول الله ما من رجل بعد رسول الله ﷺ أفضل منه في كذا وكذا فقال النبي ﷺ ويحك قطعت عنق صاحبك مرارا يقول ذلك قال رسول الله ﷺ إن كان أحدكم مادحا أخاه لا محالة فليقل أحسب فلانا إن كان يرى أنه كذاك ولا أزكي على الله تبارك وتعالى أحدا وحسيبه الله أحسبه كذا وكذا
Its isnad is sahih, it has been mentioned before many times with the same meaning. This wording is found in Muslim 4/2296, no. 3000, in the chapter on abstinence, on the prohibition of praise, and Bukhari 5/274, no. 2662, Fath al-Bari, in the chapter on testimonies, when someone commends a man, and Abu Dawud 4/255, no. 4805, and Ibn Majah 2/1232, no. 3744, both in the chapter on manners.
