A man came to Ibn Abbas and said, "Revelation came down upon the Prophet ﷺ for ten years in Mecca and ten in Medina."Ibn Abbas replied, "Who says that? Revelation came down upon him in Mecca for ten and five and sixty, and even more."

Its isnad is sahih, but its wording in the two original manuscripts is incomplete. The word "upon him" was not mentioned in H, and we added it from K. As for the phrase "and sixty-five and more," this is exactly how it appears in both originals, but it makes no sense. The correct version of this hadith is what Ibn Kathir related in Tarikh 5:259, from Musnad, with this same isnad, "It was revealed to him fifteen years in Makkah and ten in Madinah, sixty-five and more," meaning he lived sixty-five years and more.Ibn Kathir said, "This is among the reports unique to Ahmad, both in isnad and text."See 1846, 1945, 2017.
