Maqil bin Yasar fell gravely ill, and Ibn Ziyad came to visit him. Maqil said, "I am going to tell you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, 'Whoever is given charge over a flock and does not surround them with sincere care will not find the fragrance of Paradise, though its fragrance can be detected from a distance of a hundred years' travel.'"Ibn Ziyad asked, "Why did you not tell me this before now?"Maqil replied, "Even now, were it not for the position you hold, I would not have told you."
حدثنا هوذة بن خليفة حدثنا عوف
مرض معقل بن يسار مرضا ثقل فيه فأتاه ابن زياد يعوده فقال إني محدثك حديثا سمعته من رسول الله ﷺ يقول من استرعي رعية فلم يحطهم بنصيحة لم يجد ريح الجنة وريحها يوجد من مسيرة مائة عام قال ابن زياد ألا كنت حدثتني بهذا قبل الآن قال والآن لولا الذي أنت عليه لم أحدثك به
