When the delegation of Abdul-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Medina, he asked, "Who is the delegation?" or he said, "Who are the people?"They replied, "Rabia."He said, "Welcome to the delegation," or he said, "Welcome to the people, neither disgraced nor regretful."They said, "Messenger of Allah, we have come to you from a distant region, and between us and you lies this tribe of the disbelievers of Mudar. We are unable to come to you except during a sacred month. So tell us of a matter by which we may enter Paradise and inform those we have left behind."They also asked him about drinks. He commanded them with four things and forbade them four things. He commanded them to believe in Allah, then asked, "Do you know what belief in Allah is?"They said, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He said, "To bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, to pay the zakat, to fast Ramadan, and to give a fifth of the spoils of war."He forbade them from the dubba, the hantam, the Naqi, and the muzaffat. The narrator said, perhaps he said, "and the muqayyar."He said, "Memorize these and inform those you have left behind of them."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. It is a well known hadith, narrated by Abu Dawud 3:380–381. Munziri said, "Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi, and Nasai also narrated it." See also 2009.Abdul-Qays: a tribe that lived in Bahrain and the surrounding areas at the edges of Iraq.Ghayra khazaya wa la nadama (not disgraced and not regretful): ghayra is in the accusative as a circumstantial qualifier, though it has also been transmitted with a genitive ending by way of assimilation to the following word, and the first reading is preferred. Khazaya is the plural of khazyan, meaning one who is humiliated and disgraced. As for nadama, in Nihayah it is explained as meaning nadaaman (regretful ones), rendered in this form to match khazaya through assimilation, since nadama is properly the plural of nadman, which refers to a drinking companion who keeps you company and drinks with you. Regret, too, can be expressed as nadman, so the word need not be an assimilation to khazaya at all, but rather a plural in its own right.Ad-dubba: the gourd.Al-hantam: green glazed jars.An-naqir: the trunk of a palm tree, hollowed out in the middle, into which dates are placed and water poured over them so that it turns into an intoxicating drink.Al-muzaffat: a vessel coated with pitch, which is tar or a type of it, and the term muqayyar carries the same meaning.Hafiz has given a thorough explanation of this hadith in Fath al-Bari 1:120–125.
