The Prophet ﷺ said, "Every boy is held in pledge by his birth sacrifice, which is slaughtered on his seventh day. His head is shaved and he is smeared with blood." The narrator added, "and he is given a name."Hammam said in his version, "We went back and checked with him, and it was indeed 'he is smeared with blood.'"Hammam said that Qatada used to describe the blood in this way, "When the sacrifice is slaughtered, a piece of wool is taken and held against the jugular veins of the animal, then placed on the crown of the child's head until the blood runs over it. Then his head is washed, and afterwards it is shaved."
حدثنا عفان حدثنا أبان العطار حدثنا قتادة عن الحسن عن سمرة عن النبي ﷺ مثله إلا أنه قال ويسمى قال همام في حديثه وراجعناه ويدمى قال همام فكان قتادة يصف الدم فيقول إذا ذبح العقيقة تؤخذ صوفة فتستقبل أوداج الذبيحة ثم توضع على يافوخ الصبي حتى إذا سال غسل رأسه ثم حلق بعد
