Muawiya bin Hayda reported,

His brother Malik said, "Muawiya, Muhammad has seized my neighbors. Go to him, for he knows you and has spoken with you."So I went with him and said, "Release my neighbors to me, for they had already embraced Islam."He turned away from him. Malik then stood up, furious, and said, "By Allah, if you do this, people will surely say that you command one thing and then go and do the opposite."I began to pull him away while he was still speaking.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What is he saying?"They replied, "By Allah, he says that if you do this, people will surely claim that you command one thing and then act contrary to it."He said, "Have they really said that, or has someone among them said it? If I were to do that, the consequence would fall on me alone, not on them. Release his neighbors to him."

عن حكيم بن معاوية عن أبيه

أن أخاه مالكا قال يا معاوية إن محمدا أخذ جيراني فانطلق إليه فإنه قد عرفك وكلمك قال فانطلقت معه فقال دع لي جيراني فإنهم قد كانوا أسلموا فأعرض عنه فقام متمعطا فقال أم والله لئن فعلت إن الناس ليزعمون أنك تأمر بالأمر وتخلف إلى غيره وجعلت أجره وهو يتكلم فقال رسول الله ﷺ ما تقول فقالوا إنك والله لئن فعلت ذلك إن الناس ليزعمون أنك لتأمر بالأمر وتخالف إلى غيره قال فقال أو قد قالوها أو قائلهم فلئن فعلت ذاك وما ذاك إلا علي وما عليهم من ذلك من شيء أرسلوا له جيرانه
