The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the noon or afternoon prayer, but he prayed only three units before giving the closing salutation. A man among the Prophet's ﷺ companions named al-Khirbaq asked, "Has the prayer been shortened?"The Prophet ﷺ inquired about it, and it turned out to be just as the man had said. So he prayed one more unit, then gave the closing salutation, then performed two prostrations, and gave the closing salutation again.

صلى رسول الله ﷺ الظهر أو العصر ثلاث ركعات ثم سلم فقال رجل من أصحاب النبي ﷺ يقال له الخرباق أقصرت الصلاة فسأل النبي ﷺ فإذا هو كما قال قال فصلى ركعة ثم سلم ثم سجد سجدتين ثم سلم
