The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched a military expedition and placed Ali bin Abu Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, in command. During the journey he did something that drew criticism. Affan said, four of the companions of Muhammad ﷺ made a pact among themselves to report what he had done to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.Imran said, whenever we returned from a journey, we would go first to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and greet him. So they entered upon him, and one of them stood up and said, "Messenger of Allah, Ali did such and such." The Prophet ﷺ turned away from him.Then the second stood up and said, "Messenger of Allah, Ali did such and such." He turned away from him as well.Then the third stood up and said, "Messenger of Allah, Ali did such and such." He turned away from him too.Then the fourth stood up and said, "Messenger of Allah, Ali did such and such."At this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to the fourth man, his face having changed, and said, "Leave Ali alone. Leave Ali alone. Ali is from me and I am from him, and he is the guardian of every believer after me."
حدثنا عبد الرزاق وعفان المعنى وهذا حديث عبد الرزاق قالا ثنا جعفر بن سليمان قال حدثني يزيد الرشك عن مطرف بن عبد الله
بعث رسول الله ﷺ سرية وأمر عليهم علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله تعالى عنه فأحدث شيئا في سفره فتعاهد قال عفان فتعاقد أربعة من أصحاب محمد ﷺ أن يذكروا أمره لرسول الله ﷺ قال عمران وكنا إذا قدمنا من سفر بدأنا برسول الله ﷺ فسلمنا عليه قال فدخلوا عليه فقام رجل منهم فقال يا رسول الله إن عليا فعل كذا وكذا فأعرض عنه ثم قام الثاني فقال يا رسول الله إن عليا فعل كذا وكذا فأعرض عنه ثم قام الثالث فقال يا رسول الله إن عليا فعل كذا وكذا فأعرض عنه ثم قام الرابع فقال يا رسول الله إن عليا فعل كذا وكذا قال فأقبل رسول الله ﷺ على الرابع وقد تغير وجهه فقال دعوا عليا دعوا عليا إن عليا مني وأنا منه وهو ولي كل مؤمن بعدي
