He said, "Some people from the Asharis came to me and said, 'Come with us to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for we have a need.' So I went with them.They said, 'Messenger of Allah, employ us in your service.'I excused myself before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from what they had said and told him, 'I did not know what their need was.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ believed me and accepted my excuse, and he said, 'We do not employ in our service anyone who asks for it.'"
حدثنا سليمان بن حرب قال ثنا عمر بن علي بن مقدم قال ثنا أبو عميس عن سعيد بن أبي بردة عن أبيه
وقال أتاني ناس من الأشعريين فقالوا اذهب معنا إلى رسول الله ﷺ فإن لنا حاجة قال فقمت معهم فقالوا يا رسول الله استعن بنا في عملك فاعتذرت إلى رسول الله ﷺ مما قالوا وقلت لم أدر ما حاجتهم فصدقني رسول الله ﷺ وعذرني وقال إنا لا نستعين في عملنا من سألناه
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Umar bin Ali bin Ata bin Muqaddam is trustworthy, though he practices tadlis in his narrations as recorded by the group, and here he has explicitly stated "narrated to us." Abu Umays is Utba bin Abd Allah Masudi. The hadith has already appeared at 19554.
