A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking him about the times of prayer, but he gave no reply. Then he instructed Bilal to call the iqamah for the dawn prayer when dawn first broke, at a time when people could barely recognize one another. Next, he instructed him to call the iqamah for the noon prayer just after the sun had passed its zenith, when an observer might wonder whether midday had arrived or not, though the Prophet knew better than they did. Then he instructed him to call the iqamah for the afternoon prayer while the sun was still high. Then he instructed him to call the iqamah for the sunset prayer the moment the sun had set. Then he instructed him to call the iqamah for the night prayer when the twilight had vanished. The next day, he delayed the dawn prayer until, by the time he finished, an observer would say the sun had risen or was about to rise. He delayed the noon prayer until close to the time of the previous day's afternoon prayer. He delayed the afternoon prayer until, by the time he finished, an observer would say the sun had turned red. He delayed the sunset prayer until the twilight was about to disappear. He delayed the night prayer until the first third of the night had passed. Then he summoned the man who had asked the question and said, "The time for each prayer lies between these two."
