Abu Musa Ashari reported,

The Prophet ﷺ said, "When a funeral procession passes by you, whether the deceased is a Muslim, a Jew, or a Christian, stand up for it. We do not stand for the deceased itself, but rather for the angels accompanying it."Layth said, I mentioned this hadith to Mujahid, and he said, Abdullah bin Sakhbara al-Azdi told me, "We were sitting with Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, waiting for a funeral, when another funeral passed by us, so we stood up."Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, asked, "What made you stand?"We replied, "This is what you, the companions of Muhammad, have brought to us."He asked, "And what is that?"I said, "Abu Musa claimed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'When a funeral procession passes by you, whether the deceased is a Muslim, a Jew, or a Christian, stand up for it. We do not stand for the deceased itself, but rather for the angels accompanying it.'"Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never did this except once, for a Jewish man. They were People of the Book, and he used to imitate them in some matters. When he was forbidden from doing so, he stopped, and never did it again afterward."

حدثنا أبو النضر قال حدثنا أبو معاوية يعني شيبان عن ليث

عن أبي بردة بن أبي موسى عن أبيه

عن النبي ﷺ قال إذا مرت بكم جنازة فإن كان مسلما أو يهوديا أو نصرانيا فقوموا لها فإنه ليس لها نقوم ولكن نقوم لمن معها من الملائكة قال ليث فذكرت هذا الحديث لمجاهد فقال حدثني عبد الله بن سخبرة الأزدى قال إنا لجلوس مع علي رضي الله تعالى عنه ننتظر جنازة إذ مرت بنا أخرى فقمنا فقال علي رضي الله تعالى عنه ما يقيمكم فقلنا هذا ما تأتونا به يا أصحاب محمد قال وما ذاك قلت زعم أبو موسى أن رسول الله ﷺ قال إذا مرت بكم جنازة إن كان مسلما أو يهوديا أو نصرانيا فقوموا لها فإنه ليس لها نقوم ولكن نقوم لمن معها من الملائكة فقال علي رضي الله تعالى عنه ما فعلها رسول الله ﷺ قط غير مرة برجل من اليهود وكانوا أهل كتاب وكان يتشبه بهم فإذا نهي انتهى فما عاد لها بعد
