I am amazed at those who fast ahead of the month, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not fast until you see it," or he said, "Fast when you sight it."
حدثنا سفيان عن عمرو عن محمد بن حنين
عجبت ممن يتقدم الشهر وقد قال رسول الله ﷺ لا تصوموا حتى تروه أو قال صوموا لرؤيته
Its isnad is hasan. Muhammad bin Hunayn is a tabii from whom only Amr bin Dinar narrated, and he is not mentioned with any criticism, so he is presumed reliable and trustworthy, Allah willing. However, there has been disagreement about the correct form of his name.In Tahdheeb 9:136 it says, "This is how it appears in some manuscripts of Nasai, but in the older manuscripts it is Muhammad bin Jubayr, that is, the son of Mutim, and that is correct. It is likewise given that way in the Musnad and elsewhere."I say, Daraqutni mentioned that Muhammad bin Hunayn also narrated from Ibn Abbas, and he said that he is the brother of Ubayd bin Hunayn. This is also how it is given, carefully verified, in Sunan al-Kubra in the transmission of Ibn Ahmar from Nasai, and Allah knows best.What he cited from the Musnad differs from what is established in the two manuscripts here, for in both of them, as we have recorded it, the name is Muhammad bin Hunayn.As for the meaning of the hadith, it is sahih and well known from the hadith of Ibn Abbas and others.
