Zayd bin Arqam reported,

The narrator reported concerning the Prophet ﷺ that when Abdullah bin Ubayy said what he said, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah," and he also said, "If we return to Madinah…"The narrator continued, "I heard him say it, so I went to the Prophet ﷺ and told him about it. Some men of the Ansar then blamed me for it. Abdullah came and swore that he had never said it, so I went back home and fell asleep.Then a messenger from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me, or else word reached me, so I went to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, 'Allah has confirmed that you spoke the truth and has excused you.'Then this verse was revealed, 'They are the ones who say, do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah' [Surah Munafiqun 63:7]."
