The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delayed it until much of the night had passed, as Allah willed.Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, the women and children have fallen asleep."He then came out and said, "Were it not that I would impose hardship on my community, I would have ordered them to pray it at this hour."
Its isnad is sahih. His statement "delayed it" refers to the night prayer (Isha). Bukhari 2:41-42 narrated the hadith at length, as part of a story, through the route of Ibn Jurayj, from Ataa, from Ibn Abbas. In Majma al-Zawaid 1:313, there is another hadith from Ibn Abbas with this same meaning, narrated by Tabarani, whose narrators are trustworthy.
