I was among the delegation from the Banu Malik clan of Thakeef who came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and embraced Islam. He had us lodged in a tent of his, and he would come to us back and forth between his houses and the mosque. After he prayed the evening prayer, he would come to us and continue speaking with us, complaining about Quraysh and the people of Mecca. Then he would say, "It is not the same. In Mecca we were humiliated and oppressed, but when we emigrated to Medina, the fortunes of war went sometimes against us and sometimes in our favor."Then one night he stayed away from us and did not come, and the delay after the evening prayer grew long for us.We said, "What kept you from us, Messenger of Allah?"He replied, "A portion of the Quran came upon me to recite, and I did not want to leave until I had finished it."When morning came, we asked the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "How do you divide the Quran into portions?"They said, "We divide it as six surahs, then five surahs, then seven surahs, then nine surahs, then eleven surahs, then thirteen surahs, then the portion of al-Mufassal from Qaf until the end."

كنت في الوفد الذين أتوا رسول الله ﷺ أسلموا من ثقيف من بني مالك أنزلنا في قبة له فكان يختلف إلينا بين بيوته وبين المسجد فإذا صلى العشاء الآخرة انصرف إلينا فلا يبرح يحدثنا ويشتكي قريشا ويشتكي أهل مكة ثم يقول لا سواء كنا بمكة مستذلين أو مستضعفين فلما خرجنا إلى المدينة كانت سجال الحرب علينا ولنا فمكث عنا ليلة لم يأتنا حتى طال ذلك علينا بعد العشاء قال قلنا ما أمكثك عنا يا رسول الله قال طرأ عني حزب من القرآن فأردت أن لا أخرج حتى أقضيه فسألنا أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ حين أصبحنا قال قلنا كيف تحزبون القرآن قالوا نحزبه ست سور وخمس سور وسبع سور وتسع سور وإحدى عشرة سورة وثلاث عشرة سورة وحزب المفصل من ق حتى تختم
