Ibn Adra reported,

I was standing guard over the Prophet ﷺ one night when he went out to attend to some need. He saw me, took me by the hand, and we walked together. We passed by a man who was praying and reciting the Quran aloud.The Prophet ﷺ said, "Perhaps he is showing off."I said, "Messenger of Allah, he is praying and reciting the Quran."He let go of my hand and said, "You will never attain this matter by overpowering."Then on another night he went out for some need while I was guarding him. He took me by the hand, and we passed by a man praying with the Quran.I said, "Perhaps he is showing off."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "No, he is one who turns often to Allah in repentance."I looked, and there he was, Abdullah Dhul-Bijadayn.

حدثنا وكيع أخبرنا هشام بن سعد عن زيد بن أسلم

عن ابن الأدرع قال

كنت أحرس النبي ﷺ ذات ليلة فخرج لبعض حاجته قال فرآني فأخذ بيدي فانطلقنا فمررنا على رجل يصلي يجهر بالقرآن فقال النبي ﷺ عسى أن يكون مرائيا قال قلت يا رسول الله يصلي يجهر بالقرآن قال فرفض يدي ثم قال إنكم لن تنالوا هذا الأمر بالمغالبة قال ثم خرج ذات ليلة وأنا أحرسه لبعض حاجته فأخذ بيدي فمررنا على رجل يصلي بالقرآن قال فقلت عسى أن يكون مرائيا فقال النبي ﷺ كلا إنه أواب قال فنظرت فإذا هو عبد الله ذو البجادين
