Miswar bin Makhrama reported,

Amr bin Awf Ansari, an ally of the clan of Amir bin Luayy who had been present at Badr with the Prophet ﷺ, reported that the Prophet ﷺ sent Abu Ubayda bin Jarrah to Bahrain to collect its tribute. The Prophet ﷺ had made peace with the people of Bahrain and appointed Ala bin Hadrami over them, and Abu Ubayda arrived with wealth from Bahrain. He also reported that when the delegation of Hawazin came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as Muslims, they asked him to return their property and their captives to them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and said to them, "You see who is with me, and the speech I love most is the most truthful. So choose one of the two, either the captives or the property. I have already waited for you."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had given them a delay of somewhat over ten nights after his return from Taif. When it became clear to them that he would return only one of the two, they said, "Then we choose our captives."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose among the Muslims, praised Allah عز وجل as He deserves, and then said, "Now then, your brothers have come to us in repentance, and I have decided to return their captives to them. Whoever among you is willing to give them up freely, let him do so. And whoever among you wishes to hold to his share until we give it to him out of the first spoils Allah عز وجل grants us, let him do so."The people said, "We give them up freely for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "We cannot tell which of you has consented and which has not. Go back, and let your chiefs bring your decision to us."So the people dispersed, their chiefs spoke with them, and then they returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him that the people had consented and given them up willingly. This is what has reached me concerning the captives of Hawazin.
