Ammar bin Yasir reported,

He used to relate that he was with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey, and Ayesha was with him. Her necklace was lost, and the people were detained searching for it until morning came, and they had no water with them. So the verse of tayammum was revealed.Ammar said, "They got up and struck their hands on the ground, then wiped their faces. Then they did it again, struck their hands a second time, and wiped their arms up to the armpits," or he said, "up to the shoulders."

كان يحدث أنه كان مع النبي ﷺ في سفر معه عائشة فهلك عقدها فحبس الناس في ابتغائه حتى أصبحوا وليس معهم ماء فنزل التيمم قال عمار فقاموا فمسحوا بها فضربوا أيديهم فمسحوا وجوههم ثم عادوا فضربوا بأيديهم ثانية ثم مسحوا أيديهم إلى الإبطين أو قال إلى المناكب
