Bara bin Azib reported, "We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to attend a funeral. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat by the grave and we sat around him, as still as if birds were perched on our heads, while the lahd was being prepared for the deceased. He said, 'I seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave,' three times. Then he said, 'When the believer is about to depart this world and turn toward the next, angels descend to him with faces as bright as the sun, each carrying a shroud and burial scent. They sit before him as far as the eye can see. When his soul leaves his body, every angel between the heavens and the earth, and every angel in the heavens, prays for him. The gates of heaven are opened for him, and the inhabitants of every gate beg Allah that his soul be brought up through their gate. When his soul is taken up, they say, 'Lord, this is Your servant so-and-so.' Allah replies, 'Return him, for I have promised them that I created them from it, will return them to it, and will bring them out of it once more.'He hears the footsteps of his companions as they leave him. Then a visitor comes to him and asks, 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your prophet?' He answers, 'My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my prophet is Muhammad ﷺ.' The visitor rebukes him and asks again, 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your prophet?' This is the final test the believer faces. It is at this moment that Allah's words apply, "Allah keeps firm those who believe with the firm word in the life of this world and in the Hereafter" [Ibrahim 14:27]. So he says, 'My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my prophet is Muhammad ﷺ.' The visitor tells him, 'You have spoken the truth.'Then another comes to him with a handsome face, a pleasant fragrance, and beautiful clothes, and says, 'Rejoice with honor from Allah and lasting bliss.' He asks, 'And may Allah give you good news as well. Who are you?' The visitor replies, 'I am your righteous deeds. By Allah, you were quick to obey Allah and slow to disobey Him, so may Allah reward you with good.'Then a gate to Paradise and a gate to the Fire are opened for him, and it is said, 'This would have been your dwelling had you disobeyed Allah, but Allah has replaced it with this.' When he sees what is in Paradise, he says, 'My Lord, hasten the coming of the Hour so I may return to my family and wealth.' He is told, 'Be still.'As for the disbeliever, when he is about to leave this world and face the next, harsh and severe angels descend upon him. They tear his soul out as a many-pronged skewer is dragged through wet wool, ripping it out along with the veins. Every angel between the heavens and the earth, and every angel in the heavens, curses him. The gates of heaven are shut, and the inhabitants of every gate beg Allah that his soul not be brought up through their gate. When his soul is taken up, they say, 'Lord, so-and-so the son of so-and-so, Your servant.' Allah says, 'Return him, for I have promised them that I created them from it, will return them to it, and will bring them out of it once more.'He hears the footsteps of his companions as they leave him. Then a visitor comes to him and asks, 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your prophet?' He answers, 'I do not know.' The visitor says, 'You did not know and you did not follow.'Then another comes to him with an ugly face, foul clothes, and a stench, and says, 'Receive news of disgrace from Allah and lasting torment.' He asks, 'And may Allah give you news of evil as well. Who are you?' The visitor replies, 'I am your wicked deeds. You were slow to obey Allah and quick to disobey Him, so may Allah reward you with evil.'Then there is sent against him one who is blind, deaf, and mute, holding a hammer so heavy that if he struck a mountain with it the mountain would crumble to dust. He strikes him with it until he turns to dust, then Allah restores him as he was, and he strikes him again. He cries out a cry heard by every creature except humans and jinn.'"Bara bin Azib added, "Then a gate to the Fire is opened for him, and bedding from the Fire is spread out for him."
