When Barirah was given the choice, I saw her husband following her through the streets of Madinah with tears streaming down his beard. He spoke to Abbas, asking him to intercede with the Prophet ﷺ on his behalf.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Barirah, "He is your husband."She replied, "Are you commanding me to take him back, Messenger of Allah?"He said, "I am only interceding."She said, "Then I have no need of him."So he gave her the choice, and she chose herself. He was a slave belonging to the family of Mughira, called Mughith.
حدثنا هشيم أنبأنا خالد عن عكرمة
لما خيرت بريرة رأيت زوجها يتبعها في سكك المدينة ودموعه تسيل على لحيته فكلم العباس ليكلم فيه النبي ﷺ فقال رسول الله ﷺ لبريرة إنه زوجك فقالت تأمرني به يا رسول الله قال إنما أنا شافع قال فخيرها فاختارت نفسها وكان عبدا لآل المغيرة يقال له مغيث
Its isnad is sahih. Bareerah, with a fatha on the ba and a kasra on the ra, was a freedwoman who had belonged to some of the Ansar, who had entered into a manumission contract with her. Ayesha paid off her debt on her behalf and freed her, so she became Ayesha's freedwoman. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave her the choice regarding her manumission, and she chose herself. Her story is well known in the Sahihayn and elsewhere, narrated from Ayesha and others, and it is the one in which the hadith "the right of inheritance from a freed slave belongs to the one who freed him" occurs.
