Ammar delivered a sermon to us that was both eloquent and brief. When he came down, we said, "Abu al-Yaqzan, you spoke eloquently and concisely. If only you had taken a little more time."He replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'A man's lengthy prayer and short sermon are a sign of his understanding, so make your prayer long and your sermon short, for indeed some eloquence is like magic.'"
حدثنا قريش بن إبراهيم قال حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن عبد الملك بن أبجر عن أبيه عن واصل بن حيان قال قال
خطبنا عمار فأبلغ وأوجز فلما نزل قلنا يا أبا اليقظان لقد أبلغت وأوجزت فلو كنت تنفست قال إني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول إن طول صلاة الرجل وقصر خطبته مئنة من فقهه فأطيلوا الصلاة وأقصروا الخطبة فإن من البيان لسحرا
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Quraysh bin Ibrahim Saydalani Baghdadi was deemed trustworthy by Ibn Hibban, while the others were silent about him. Abdul-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Abjar is trustworthy, and his hadith is found in Muslim, but the correct form of his name is Abdul-Rahman bin Abdul-Malik bin Saeed bin Hayan bin Abjar. His father is trustworthy as well, and his hadith is also found in Muslim. Wasil bin Hayan is trustworthy and firmly established, and likewise Abu Waail Shaqiq bin Salama.The hadith was narrated by Muslim, 2/594, no. 869, in the Book of Friday Prayer, Shortening the Prayer and the Sermon, by Darimi, 1/440, no. 1556, in the Book of Prayer, by Abu Yaala, 3/206, no. 1642, and by Ibn Khuzayma, 3/142, no. 1782.
