Mughira bin Shuba reported,

He traveled with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ entered a valley, relieved himself, then came out and approached him. He performed wudu, taking off his leather socks and washing his feet. After he had finished, he later passed wind, so he returned, came back out, performed wudu again, and this time wiped over his leather socks.I said, "Prophet of Allah, did you forget? Why did you not take off the leather socks?"He replied, "Not at all. Rather, you have forgotten. This is what my Lord commanded me to do."

أنه سافر مع رسول الله ﷺ فدخل النبي ﷺ واديا فقضى حاجته ثم خرج فأتاه فتوضأ فخلع خفيه فتوضأ فلما فرغ وجد ريحا بعد ذلك فعاد فخرج فتوضأ ومسح على خفيه فقلت يا نبي الله نسيت لم تخلع الخفين قال كلا بل أنت نسيت بهذا أمرني ربي عز وجل
