Abdullah bin Maqil reported,

I sat with Kaab bin Ujra while he was in the masjid and asked him about this verse, "then a fidya of fasting, or charity, or sacrifice" [Baqarah 2:196].Kaab said, "It was revealed concerning me. I had an ailment in my head, so I was carried to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while the lice were falling onto my face.He said, "I did not think your hardship had reached what I now see. Can you find a sheep?"I said, "No."Then this verse was revealed, "then a fidya of fasting, or charity, or sacrifice" [Baqarah 2:196]. He explained, "Fasting three days, or feeding six poor people, half a saa of food for each poor person."Kaab said, "It was revealed concerning me in particular, but it applies to all of you in general."

عن عبد الله بن معقل قال

قعدت إلى كعب بن عجرة وهو في المسجد فسألته عن هذه الآية {ففدية من صيام أو صدقة أو نسك} قال فقال كعب نزلت في كان بي أذى من رأسي فحملت إلى رسول الله ﷺ والقمل يتناثر على وجهي فقال ما كنت أرى أن الجهد بلغ بك ما أرى أتجد شاة فقلت لا فنزلت هذه الآية {ففدية من صيام أو صدقة أو نسك} قال صوم ثلاثة أيام أو إطعام ستة مساكين نصف صاع طعام لكل مسكين قال فنزلت في خاصة وهي لكم عامة
