The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Perhaps you recite while the imam is reciting?" He repeated this two or three times. They replied, "Messenger of Allah, yes, we do."He said, "Do not do so, except that each of you should recite the Opening of the Book."
Its isnad is sahih. Muhammad bin Abu Ayesha is deemed trustworthy, and his hadith appears in Muslim and the four Sunan. The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud, 1/217, no. 823, in the Book of Prayer, chapter on one who omits recitation in his prayer, and by Abdul-Razzaq, 2/127, no. 2766. Haythami said, 2/111, "Its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih." The hadith is well known in the Sahih collections with similar wording, and the disagreement regarding recitation behind the imam has already been mentioned.
