I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intending to ask him about every matter of righteousness and sin without leaving anything out. I found a crowd gathered around him, so I began stepping over the people to reach him. They said, "Stay back, Wabisa, away from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Stay back, Wabisa."I said, "I am Wabisa. Let me get close to him, for he is the dearest of people to me to be near."He said to me, "Come closer, Wabisa. Come closer, Wabisa."So I drew near to him until my knee touched his knee.He said, "Wabisa, shall I tell you what you came to ask me about?"I said, "Messenger of Allah, please tell me."He said, "You came to ask me about righteousness and sin."I said, "Yes."Then he gathered his three fingers and began tapping them against my chest, saying, "Wabisa, consult your own heart. Righteousness is what the heart finds peace in and the soul finds tranquility in. Sin is what wavers in the heart and lingers uncertainly in the breast, even if people give you their verdict."Sufyan said, "And give you their verdict."
حدثنا يزيد بن هارون حدثنا حماد بن سلمة عن الزبير أبي عبد السلام عن أيوب بن عبد الله بن مكرز
أتيت رسول الله ﷺ وأنا أريد أن لا أدع شيئا من البر والإثم إلا سألته عنه وإذا عنده جمع فذهبت أتخطى الناس فقالوا إليك يا وابصة عن رسول الله ﷺ إليك يا وابصة فقلت أنا وابصة دعوني أدنو منه فإنه من أحب الناس إلي أن أدنو منه فقال لي ادن يا وابصة ادن يا وابصة فدنوت منه حتى مست ركبتي ركبته فقال يا وابصة أخبرك ما جئت تسألني عنه أو تسألني فقلت يا رسول الله فأخبرني قال جئت تسألني عن البر والإثم قلت نعم فجمع أصابعه الثلاث فجعل ينكت بها في صدري ويقول يا وابصة استفت نفسك البر ما اطمأن إليه القلب واطمأنت إليه النفس والإثم ما حاك في القلب وتردد في الصدر وإن أفتاك الناس قال سفيان وأفتوك
