The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The one who has the means to repay his debt but delays it makes lawful action against his honor and his punishment."Waki explained, "Action against his honor means complaining about him, and his punishment means imprisoning him."
حدثنا وكيع حدثنا وبر بن أبي دليلة شيخ من أهل الطائف عن محمد بن ميمون بن مسيكة وأثنى عليه خيرا
قال رسول الله ﷺ لي الواجد يحل عرضه وعقوبته قال وكيع عرضه شكايته وعقوبته حبسه
Its isnad is sahih. Birr bin Abu Dulayla Taifi was deemed reliable by Ibn Main and others, and Muhammad bin Maymun here is attributed to his grandfather, being Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Maymun bin Sabika Taifi, whom Ibn Hibban deemed reliable and Abu Hatim approved of. The hadith was narrated by Bukhari 5/62, no. 2401, Fath al-Bari, in the Book of Borrowing, chapter "For the one owed a right there is [a right to] speech," and Abu Dawud 3/313, no. 3628, in the Book of Judgments, chapter on imprisonment for debt, and Nasai 7/316, no. 4690, and Ibn Majah 2/811, no. 2427, and Ibn Hibban 283, no. 1164, Mawarid, and Hakim 4/102, with Dhahabi concurring with him.
