He heard the Prophet ﷺ say, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "None of you should take his companion's belongings, neither in seriousness nor in jest. If one of you finds his companion's stick, he should return it to him."
حدثنا عبد الرزاق أخبرنا معمر عن ابن أبي ذئب
أنه سمع النبي ﷺ قال قال رسول الله ﷺ لا يأخذن أحدكم متاع صاحبه جادا ولا لاعبا وإذا وجد أحدكم عصا صاحبه فليرددها عليه
Its isnad is sahih. Abdullah bin Saaib bin Yazid is trustworthy, declared trustworthy by Nasai, Abu Zura, and Ibn Hibban. He is the Kindi known as Ibn Ukht Namir, and his father was a minor companion.The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud, 4/301, no. 5003, in the chapter on manners, "One who takes something in jest," and by Bukhari in Al-Adab, no. 241, no. 95. Hakim graded it sahih, 3/637, and Dhahabi remained silent on it.
