The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to the people on the evening of Arafah and on the morning of Jam, when we were departing, "Maintain calm." He was holding back his she-camel until, when he entered Mina at the descent of Muhassir, he said, "You should use pebbles the size of those flicked between the fingers for stoning the Jamrah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured with his hand, demonstrating how a person flicks something with his fingers.Rawh and al-Bursani said, "the evening of Arafah and the morning of Jam," and they said, "when they were departing."
حدثنا يحيى عن ابن جريج أخبرني أبو الزبير أخبرني أبو معبد قال سمعت ابن عباس يخبر
قال رسول الله ﷺ عشية عرفة غداة جمع للناس حين دفعنا عليكم السكينة وهو كاف ناقته حتى إذا دخل منى حين هبط محسرا قال عليكم بحصى الخذف الذي يرمى به الجمرة ورسول الله ﷺ يشير بيده كما يخذف الإنسان وقال روح والبرساني عشية عرفة وغداة جمع وقالا حين دفعوا
Its isnad is sahih. Abu Mabad, his name was Nafidh, and he was the freedman of Ibn Abbas, and he is trustworthy. Muslim narrated the hadith at 1:363 through the route of Layth from Abu Zubayr, and through the route of Ibn Jurayj from Abu Zubayr. Layth's narration will come at 1796. Nasai also narrated it, as found in Dhakhair Mawarith 6073."Pebbles of khadhf" is with sukun on the dhal. Khadhf means throwing a pebble or stone that you hold between your two index fingers, or using a small wooden flicking device that you throw with between the thumb and index finger. What is meant by "pebbles of khadhf" here is small pebbles.As for the phrase "Rawh and Bursani said," in manuscript H it reads "Rawh Bursani said," with the conjunction "and" omitted, which is an error. We have corrected it based on manuscript K. Rawh is Ibn Ubadah, and Bursani is Muhammad bin Bakr, and their narration will come at 1821.As for "when they pushed forth," he means that in their narration the wording is this, in place of "when we pushed forth" in this narration. And in manuscript H it reads "رفعوا" with a ra, which is an error.
