We caught some lizards while we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of his expeditions. The people boiled and roasted them. I took a lizard, roasted it, and brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He placed it before him, took a stick, and began turning over his fingers with it, or counting them. Then he said, "A community from the Children of Israil was transformed into creatures on the earth, and I do not know which creatures they are."I said, "The people have already roasted them."He neither ate from it nor forbade them from doing so.
Its isnad is sahih because of Yazid bin Ataa, whom Ahmad and Ibn Adi accepted, and Ibn Adi said, "His hadith is written down," while Ibn Main graded him daif. Bukhari cited him in Af'aal al-Ibad. As for the rest, they are all reliable and eminent narrators. Husayn is Ibn Abdul-Rahman Sulami, and the hadith is like the one before it. In addition to what has already been mentioned, see Sunan Abu Dawud 3795, Ibn Majah 3238, and Ibn Hibban 1070 in Mawarid.
