Abu Nawfal bin Abu Aqrab reported,

Amr bin As was overcome with intense distress at the time of death. When his son Abdullah bin Amr saw this, he said, "Father of Abdullah, what is this distress? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to bring you close and appoint you to positions of authority."He replied, "My son, that was indeed so, and I will tell you about it. By Allah, I do not know whether it was out of genuine love or merely to win me over. But I bear witness concerning two men that he departed from this world loving them dearly, the son of Sumayy and the son of Umm Abd."When he had finished speaking, he placed his hand at the spot beneath his chin where a captive's collar would rest and said, "O Allah, You commanded us and we abandoned Your commands, You forbade us and we plunged into what You forbade. Nothing can avail us except Your forgiveness."This remained his constant refrain until he died.
