We used to lease land for cultivation during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in exchange for a third or a quarter of the produce, or for a specified amount of food. Then one of my paternal uncles came to us and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has forbidden us from a practice that was profitable to us, but obedience to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is better and more beneficial for us."We asked, "What is that?"He replied, "The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever has land should cultivate it himself or let his brother cultivate it. He must not rent it out for a third, a quarter, or a specified amount of food.'"Qatada said, this uncle was Zaheer.

Its isnad is sahih, its narrators are leading authorities. Yaala bin Hakeem is Thaqafi, their freedman, a well-known trustworthy narrator whose hadith appears in the Sahihayn. Sulayman bin Yasar is Hilali, the imam who was one of the seven jurists. The hadith has already occurred, see 17791.
