The Prophet ﷺ was sitting in a gathering with his companions when Jibreel came to him in a form other than his own. The Prophet took him for one of the Muslims. Jibreel greeted him and he returned the greeting
. Then Jibreel placed his hand on the knees of the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?"The Prophet answered, "That you surrender yourself to Allah, that you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, that you establish the prayer, and that you pay zakat."Jibreel asked, "So if I do that, have I become a Muslim?""Yes," he replied. Then Jibreel asked, "What is faith?"The Prophet answered, "That you believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, the prophets, death, life after death, Paradise and the Fire, the reckoning, the scales, and destiny in its entirety, both its good and its evil."Jibreel asked, "So if I do that, have I become a believer?""Yes," he replied. Then Jibreel asked, "What is excellence, Messenger of Allah?"The Prophet answered, "That you worship Allah as though you see Him, for even if you do not see Him, He surely sees you."Jibreel asked, "So if I do that, have I attained excellence?""Yes," he replied. The people present could hear the replies of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to him, but they could not see the one speaking to him nor hear his words.Jibreel then asked, "When is the Hour, Messenger of Allah?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Glory be to Allah. There are five matters of the unseen that none knows but Allah. Indeed, with Allah is the knowledge of the Hour. He sends down the rain, and He knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Aleem, All-Aware" [Luqman 31:34].The questioner said, "Messenger of Allah, if you wish, I can tell you of two signs that will come before it.""Tell me," said the Prophet. He said, "When you see the slave woman giving birth to her master, when the people of buildings compete in raising their buildings ever higher, and when the destitute and the uncouth become the leaders of the people."The Prophet asked, "And who are those, Messenger of Allah?"He answered, "The Arabs."Then he turned away, and no trace of his path was seen afterward. The Prophet said, "Glory be to Allah," three times, then said, "He came to teach the people their religion. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, he has never come to me without my recognizing him, except this one time."
