The Prophet ﷺ mentioned something and said, "That will be at the time when knowledge departs."We said, "Messenger of Allah, how can knowledge depart when we recite the Quran and teach it to our sons, and our sons will teach it to their sons until the Day of Resurrection?"He replied, "May your mother be bereaved of you, Ibn Umm Labid! I used to consider you among the most understanding men in Medina. Are these Jews and Christians not reciting the Torah and the Gospel without benefiting from anything in them?"
حدثنا وكيع حدثنا الأعمش عن سالم بن أبي الجعد
ذكر النبي ﷺ شيئا فقال وذاك عند أوان ذهاب العلم قال قلنا يا رسول الله وكيف يذهب العلم ونحن نقرأ القرآن ونقرئه أبناءنا ويقرئه أبناؤنا أبناءهم إلى يوم القيامة قال ثكلتك أمك يا ابن أم لبيد إن كنت لأراك من أفقه رجل بالمدينة أوليس هذه اليهود والنصارى يقرءون التوراة والإنجيل لا ينتفعون مما فيهما بشيء
Its chain of transmission is sahih, but there is disagreement over whether Salim bin Abu Jaad heard from Ziyad. Busiri said in Zawaid bin Majah, 2/1344, no. 4048, "This is a sahih chain, its narrators are trustworthy, but it is disconnected." Bukhari said in al-Tarikh al-Saghir, "Salim bin Abu Jaad did not hear from Ziyad bin Labid," and Dhahabi followed him in this in al-Kashif. Others said that Salim heard from Ziyad in the latter's final days, while Salim was a young man, for Salim died at the turn of the century while Ziyad died at the turn of the sixtieth year.
