The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us a sermon that brought tears to our eyes and made our hearts tremble.We said, "Messenger of Allah, this seems like the sermon of one bidding farewell. What do you entrust to us?"He replied, "I have left you upon a clear path, its night like its day. No one will deviate from it after me except one who is doomed. Whoever among you lives long will see much disagreement, so hold fast to what you know of my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly-guided caliphs. Cling to it and bite onto it with your molars. And you must obey, even if a slave from Ethiopia is placed in authority over you. The believer is like a docile camel, wherever he is led, he follows."
حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي حدثنا معاوية يعني ابن صالح عن ضمرة بن حبيب عن عبد الرحمن بن عمرو السلمي أنه سمع
وعظنا رسول الله ﷺ موعظة ذرفت منها العيون ووجلت منها القلوب قلنا يا رسول الله إن هذه لموعظة مودع فماذا تعهد إلينا قال قد تركتكم على البيضاء ليلها كنهارها لا يزيغ عنها بعدي إلا هالك ومن يعش منكم فسيرى اختلافا كثيرا فعليكم بما عرفتم من سنتي وسنة الخلفاء الراشدين المهديين وعليكم بالطاعة وإن عبدا حبشيا عضوا عليها بالنواجذ فإنما المؤمن كالجمل الأنف حيثما انقيد انقاد
Its isnad is sahih. Muawiya bin Salih Himsi, the judge of Andalusia, is trustworthy, and his hadith appears in Muslim and the four Sunan compilers. Damra bin Habib is the son of Suhayb Himsi, Abu Utba, who has come before us by his kunya, and he is a well-known trustworthy narrator. Abdul-Rahman bin Amr Sulami is the son of Absa, the companion who has come before us, and he is a well-known trustworthy Syrian narrator.The hadith was reported by Abu Dawud, 4/200, number 4607, in the Book of Sunnah, chapter on adherence to the sunnah, and by Tirmidhi, 5/44, number 2676, in the Book of Knowledge, chapter on acting upon the sunnah, where he said it is hasan sahih, and by Ibn Majah, 1/15, number 42, in the introduction, and likewise by Darimi, 1/57, number 95, and by Tabarani in Al-Kabir, 8/257, number 642. Hakim graded it sahih, 1/95, and Dhahabi confirmed his judgment.
