The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let the one who leads the people in prayer be the one most versed in the recitation of the Book of Allah. If they are equal in recitation, then the one most knowledgeable of the Sunnah. If they are equal in knowledge of the Sunnah, then the one who emigrated earliest. If they are equal in emigration, then the eldest among them. A man should not be led in prayer in the area of his authority, nor should anyone sit in his place of honor except with his permission."
